Expertise relevant to the Targeted Network
I have several years’ experience working in an administrative research support role within a Higher Education Institution, gaining sound knowledge and experience of research application, award, and management procedures for a range of Funding Bodies, including EU. My main area of expertise is now in the negotiation and management of research contracts. The University administers a high volume of research projects, many of which are under European funding schemes. I have experience of coordinating administrative documents and implementing contracts under large, transnational, multi-partner projects.
Newcastle University is a research-intensive Higher Education Institution. Research is administered in a central support service Research and Enterprise Services (RES). Within RES we have a dedicated Grants and Contracts Team to administer external research income, and also a dedicated EU Team with a focus on European funding streams. The Grants and Contracts and EU Teams manage projects through the application, award and negotiation of the contract phases. A dedicated EU accountancy team handles all post-award financial issues. The team is responsible for the preparation of cost statements for the project and the arrangement of audits where necessary. Also within RES we have an Enterprise Team to assist researchers to identify and develop commercial opportunities arising from their research.
In 2010, Newcastle University won the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Award for the 'Outstanding Research Management Team'.
