Description of job and tasks involved
The team I work is the Project Service team in a University’s Financial Services. We offer support services to research projects in the financial matters during the project’s lifespan, however the main focus is in the post-award phase. The focus of our functions is the funding given by the EU, the Academy of Finland and the Finnish funding agency for innovation (Business Finland). This team’s main duties are to instruct and guide the scientists about the financial and administrational tasks, help the researchers to understand the rules of each financier and advice on the use of university’s financial systems in relation to project monitoring. We also prepare the financial statements as well as help and coordinate the audits that are held during or after the projects.
In my team I am responsible for EU funded FP7 and Horizon2020 projects’ financial issues. My main duties are to guide and help the scientist with the financial and administrative issues concerning their research projects, so they could focus in their science. I help them to interpret and also to fulfill the rules and regulations that are given by the EU, organization and national law.
Experience with European research projects
The University of Turku, established in 1920, has 7 faculties and 11 independent units. There are over 20,000 students and 3,300 staff members. Internationality is one of the key areas of the University’s strategy and the University cooperates globally through numerous university networks.
Research Funding unit of the University offers support for researchers in applying for external funding. They help with issues related to funders' terms, writing a proposal and planning a research project. They also assist with the project negotiations and the project amendments. Project services team also offer support to the scientist. Project Services handle the financial services of supplementary funding during project implementation together with the project leader. The Project Services also prepare financial reporting of the Academy of Finland, Business Finland and EU together with the project leader.
