University/organisation

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) has been developed as an international science and technology organization, to strengthen the research community of Cyprus, help transform its economy to a knowledge-based economy and to create a research hub for the Eastern Mediterranean region. For realizing its vision the Institute is developing pioneering research infrastructures and programs involving cutting-edge, high throughput technologies, in order to address problems of local and regional significance and of international interest and providing high quality graduate education and training in related areas.

The creation of The Cyprus Institute (CyI), a novel, internationally recognized research institution, is the tangible manifestation of the Cyprus Research and Educational Foundation’s vision to help transform Cyprus into a knowledge-based economy, and in doing so to advance the welfare of the island and the region. Today, the Institute is a world-class research and technology institution, carrying out pioneering research programs involving cutting-edge high throughput technologies, in order to address problems of regional as well as international significance. At the same time, it provides training for future researchers and scholars through its high quality doctoral programs.

The CyI comprises three specialized multidisciplinary research centers, developed in partnership with leading international institutions in their respective thematic areas:

• Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC)

• Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC)

• Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC)

The Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC) was launched in December 2007 as the first research center of The Cyprus Institute, a non-profit research and educational institution with a scientific and technological focus.

EEWRC works in close collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany, the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation, as well as many national institutions and organizations in Cyprus and the region. The work and collaborations focus on societally relevant issues related to Energy and Renewables, Environment, Atmosphere and Climate, Water and Natural Resources.

Over the past few years, EEWRC has proven to be a leader in the area of Environmental, Atmospheric and Climate research. The Atmospheric and Climate Research Division in particular, in close co-operation with the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany, the Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) in France, and the University of Helsinki (UHEL) in Finland, have established the CyI's EEWRC as a key player of Atmosphere and Climate Research in the region and beyond. In particular, EEWRC has been instrumental in providing evidence that the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region (EMME) is a climate change “hotspot” and relating this to public health, ecosystem development and water, to name but a few of the impact sectors considered.

This collaboration has elevated to a strategic partnership towards the creation of a Research Centre of Excellence for Eastern Mediterranean Middle East Climate & Atmosphere (EMME-CARE), with European Commission Horizon-2020-TEAMING funding. These studies have attained international recognition, notably for their emphasis on the EMME, as underlined in the highly successful high-profile 2018 International Conference "Climate Change in the Mediterranean and the Middle East: Challenges & Solutions".
